Betty Friedan: Communist Sympathizer Mourned by the Leftist MSM

Betty Friedan, the Marxist and Communist sympathizer who returned to hell today, was lauded by the leftist MSM as some sort of amazing woman who changed America.

In one way, they are right: she did change America. But she changed it for the worse.

Friedan's obit includes some lovely words from fellow leftists Hillary Clinton and Eleanor Smeal. Very objective, of course.

Feminism pioneer Betty Friedan dies at 85

NEW YORK -- Betty Friedan, whose manifesto "The Feminine Mystique" helped shatter the cozy suburban ideal of the post-World War II era and laid the groundwork for the modern feminist movement, died Saturday, her birthday. She was 85.

Friedan died at her Washington, D.C., home of congestive heart failure, according to a cousin, Emily Bazelon.

Few books have so profoundly changed so many lives as did Friedan's 1963 best seller. Her assertion that a woman needed more than a husband and children was a radical break from the Eisenhower era, when the very idea of a wife doing any work outside of house work was fodder for gag writers, like an episode out of "I Love Lucy."

[...]

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., said Friedan's activism and writing "opened doors and minds, breaking down barriers for women and enlarging opportunities for women and men for generations to come. We are all the beneficiaries of her vision."

Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, publisher of Ms. magazine and a former president of the National Organization for Women, praised Friedan's legacy.

Friedan, she said, "was a giant for women's rights and a leading catalyst of the 20th century whose work led to profound changes improving the status of women and women's lives" worldwide. "The Feminine Mystique" helped to "define the lesser status of women," she said.

The book "opened women's minds to the idea that there actually might be something more," said Kim Gandy, current president of NOW, which Friedan co-founded. "And for the women who secretly harbored such unpopular thoughts, it told them that there were other women out there like them who thought there might be something more to life."

Kim Gandy, too! How many other leftist and barren women could this asslicker find to quote?

Of course, when in the midst of a full-fledged leftist lovefest, liberals like to leave out those untidy facts which tend to make their subjects look, well, like the pieces of crap that they are.

And in the case of Betty Friedan, the real facts have been conveniently ignored.

Such as, her Communist past. Not liberal - Communist.

Betty Friedan's secret Communist past

What is it with progressives? Why do they feel the need to lie so relentlessly about who they are? Recently Rigoberta MenchĂș's autobiography was exposed as a complete hoax. Now it's Betty Friedan's turn to be revealed as a feminist fibber.

In a new book, "Betty Friedan and the Making of the Feminine Mystique", Smith College professor Daniel Horowitz (no relation) establishes beyond doubt that the woman who has always presented herself as a typical suburban housewife until she began work on her groundbreaking book was in fact nothing of the kind. In fact, under her maiden name, Betty Goldstein, she was a political activist and professional propagandist for the Communist left for a quarter of a century before the publication of "The Feminist Mystique" launched the modern women's movement.

Professor Horowitz documents that Friedan was from her college days, and until her mid-30s, a Stalinist Marxist, the political intimate of the leaders of America's Cold War fifth column and for a time even the lover of a young Communist physicist working on atomic bomb projects in Berkeley's radiation lab with J. Robert Oppenheimer. Her famous description of America's suburban family household as "a comfortable concentration camp" in "The Feminine Mystique" therefore had more to do with her Marxist hatred for America than with any of her actual experience as a housewife or mother. (Her husband, Carl, also a leftist, once complained that his wife "was in the world during the whole marriage," had a full-time maid and "seldom was a wife and a mother").

It is fascinating that Friedan not only felt the need to lie about her real views and life experience then, but still feels the need to lie about them now. Although Horowitz, the author of the new biography, is a sympathetic leftist, Friedan refused to cooperate with him once she realized he was going to tell the truth about her life as Betty Goldstein. After he published an initial article about Friedan's youthful work as a "labor journalist," Friedan maligned him, saying to an American University audience, "Some historian recently wrote some attack on me in which he claimed that I was only pretending to be a suburban housewife, that I was supposed to be an agent."

So, the biographer is a leftist, yet when he exposes a fellow leftist he is castigated. How interesting.

This is just more evidence that the left continues to remain delusional.

As for Friedan, let us hope she is now sweating in the hell reserved for her.
