The media likes to make us all think that Rep. John Murtha, Downie of Pennsylvania, who fought in Vietnam (big fucking deal), is a "hawk" on military matters and voted for the war in Iraq. This somehow gives him credibility to call for a complete withdrawal of American forces from Iraq right now.
But, a closer look at Murtha's record shows that his call for withdrawal is not something new - in fact, Murtha has been a whackjob loony for a long, long time. Only the media ignores this fact.
For instance, in a vote held just in October 2004 on whether there should be a draft, only 2 members of Congress voted for it - and Murtha was one of them.
FINAL VOTE RESULTS FOR ROLL CALL 494
Notice that Fortney "Pete" Stark, another raving lunatic, also voted for this.
Now, check this out: Murtha appeared on "Newshour with Jim Lehrer," and, when Margaret Warner questioned him on Iraq, he made perhaps the most breathtaking comment heard in a long, long time:
CALL FOR WITHDRAWAL
MARGARET WARNER: But may I ask you, sir, if you believe -- he says -- for whatever reason, Iraq has become the center of terrorism - that if the U.S. appears to retreat in the face of that, that it will be a blow to the American fight against radical Islamic terrorism? What do you say to that?
REP. JOHN MURTHA: Well, I say that the fight against Americans began with Abu Ghraib. It began with the invasion of Iraq. That's when terrorism started. It didn't start when there was criticism of this administration. This administration doesn't want to listen to any ideas.
You heard right - Murtha believes that "terrorism began" when we invaded Iraq.
Unfortunately, Mr. Murtha appears to have forgotten the following:
The attack on the World Trade Center, 1993
The attack on the Khobar Towers in Sauda Arabia, 1996
The attack on the 2 US Embassies in Africa, 1998
The attack on the USS Cole, 2000
September 11, 2001
And many, many others.
That this man said this with a straight face shows how utterly detached from reality he and the other members of his "surrender now" party truly are.
