Little Johnny Edwards Still Doesn't Get It

For political watchers like me, Senator John Edwards was perhaps the worst vice presidential candidate since Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, and perhaps one of the worst of all time. He brought nothing electorally to the ticket, and in the end he looked like an intellectual midget compared to Vice President Cheney in their only debate.

So it comes as no surprise that Little Johnny cannot look at Downie losses in 2000 and 2004 to see that the "let's play the old Poverty canard' strategy did not work. But Johnny just can't help himself - or is he just a moron? Not too bright, this man who was nearly one step away from being President.

Edwards Says Poverty a Key Democrat Issue

Democrats can build the party's national strength by pushing their policies in statehouses around the country, 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards told a group of legislators Tuesday.

Edwards, speaking at a luncheon for a new liberal policy group, said voters will reward lawmakers who advocate a cornerstone of Democratic ideology: fighting poverty and standing up for the poor.

"We know what we believe. We know what we stand for. But the American people need to hear it from us," the former U.S. senator told a group of about 300 at a waterfront convention center.

Edwards' speech highlighted a program put on by the Progressive Leadership Action Network, a group that aims to rival the clout of established right-leaning think tanks such as the American Legislative Exchange Council.

Edwards thought he could win the 2004 Demmie nomination, and bet wrong. He thinks he can win the 2008 nomination, and we can lay down a strong wager right now that he will be back as a hack lawyer before long.
