Breaking News: Canada's Crappy Government Prepares to Nixon Itself to Death

You would think that 30 years after Watergate, government leaders around the world would learn a simple lesson: that taking or giving kickbacks and then trying to cover up the scandal is a fool's game which always ends with the government being thrown out of office. And now it goes with Canada, and their Alleged Prime Minister, Paul Martin, who succeeded the lowlife scumbag Jean "Potsmoker" Chrétien. Paulie Boy has been caught with his precarious government's hand in the till, and now he is on the outs. Martin's Liberal Party barely won elections last year, and needed help from the Socialist Party (never a good sign) to stay in control of the government. But now the dyke has burst, and Martin's days as PM are numbered:

Liberals Scramble to Prevent Collapse of Government Amid Party Kickback Scandal

OTTAWA, Canada (AP) - Prime Minister Paul Martin scrambled Monday to prevent the fall of his government amid a kickback scandal in his Liberal Party, as a new poll showed the opposition Conservatives would easily win fresh elections if held today.
In what some say is Canada's version of Watergate, in terms of magnitude and potential damage, Martin reiterated that he had nothing to do with the ethics fiasco, in which party members are accused of having taken kickbacks from advertising agencies hired to promote federalism in the rebellious French-speaking province of Quebec.

Ouch! And now some Canadian polls are showing that Martin's party is polling historic lows in popularity:

Liberal government scrambling to avoid defeat

The flames of political discontent from the sponsorship scandal are scorching the Liberals, and now a new poll shows the party's national support falling to 27 per cent.

That represents a 10 percentage-point drop in the past two months, according to an Ipsos-Reid poll conducted for CTV and The Globe and Mail.

The Conservatives are up to 30 per cent, a four-point rise. The NDP are at 19 per cent.

In Quebec, where Liberal gains would be crucial to any hope of forming a future majority government, the Grits trail the sovereigntist Bloc Quebecois by 30 points -- 48 to 18.

But the Liberals are down in virtually every region, and are statistically tied with the Conservatives in vote-rich Ontario.

It is always good news when Liberals are in deep political trouble...so Joobo is very, very pleased with these developments. Pleased indeed!

The beginning of the end of the Liberal reign in Canada may be sooner than anyone expects...the end for the Downies in the United States came when some of their more conservative members flew the coop for another party as they saw their political futures elsewhere. So goes it in Canada, where a Liberal member on the outs with his party is thinking of hopping ship - and causing the whole government to collapse anyway for lack of a majority:

O'Brien wooed by Tories; The London-Fanshawe MP is fed up with the Liberals and says he's close to defecting

London-Fanshawe MP Pat O'Brien said yesterday he's close to defecting from the governing Liberals and may join the Conservatives who have been courting him and other backbenchers. "The Liberal party is starting to look like the NDP-light," O'Brien said in an interview. "I don't know if I can even vote for the Liberal party . . . How can I represent it?"

A schism over social issues has widened to a chasm over plans by the Liberals to allow same-sex marriage.

"This is not the same party I joined. If the party has left me then maybe it's time to acknowledge it," O'Brien said.

It is amazing - you heard the same kind of words from Downies who could no longer stand to be in that party, and jumped to the Republicans. It brought a wave of Republican rule in DC that continues to this day.

We at Joobo Online will keep an eye on this story - we are already purchasing party favors for the day when Paul Martin and the Liberals are swept from power and a pro-American government is in control in Ottawa.
