Prosecutor Seeks 222,000 Years for Qaeda Suspects
Feb 14, 2005 — MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish prosecutors are seeking a total of 222,000 years in prison and nearly $1.17 billion in fines for three suspects accused of aiding the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
The punishments are among a total of 230,000 years of prison terms sought for 24 suspects held in jail on charges of belonging to an al Qaeda unit in Spain, according to court documents filed Monday.
The trial was due to start this month but has been delayed indefinitely because of a backlog of cases at the High Court.
I heard that with good behavior, they could effectively cut the prison sentence in half.
